Virtual CEO Chat Featuring Chris Marsh and Acumen Executive Search Team - June 2020

Chris L. Marsh is a proven business leader skilled at bringing together ideas, capital and people to ignite success.

In his 30 years as a CEO, investor and board member, he has built a strong track record of identifying promising business ideas — truly differentiated products or services that lend themselves to a recurring revenue model — and then assembling the necessary financing and leadership team to grow the company effectively to the point of sale. He has accomplished this feat 14 times in eight different industries, demonstrating a remarkable ability to duplicate success.

BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY

In his three decades as a CEO, investor and board member, Chris L. Marsh has developed a distinctive business philosophy and formula for successfully growing young companies to the point of a liquidity event.

In assessing business opportunities, Chris has learned to focus on companies that combine a truly unique idea — a core product or service based on either patented intellectual property or so-called tribal knowledge — with a recurring revenue model. He is seeking businesses with a genuine competitive advantage that are selling value, not simply the ability to compete on price or superior execution. He also ensures that there is a clear path to a financial exit if the team achieves its goals.

Once he selects a compelling idea to support, Chris draws on his strong connections with the financial capital markets and his extensive professional network to bring together the financing and the right team to catalyze growth and lead the company to success.

Chris has particular expertise in software as a service, fintech, along with other regulated industries such as life sciences and medical technology. He has also been active in the transportation, cold storage, real estate and telecommunications industries.

He believes in respect, constructive engagement and values-based leadership, and he is committed to building companies that create good jobs and contribute to the local economy while operating with integrity.

BIOGRAPHY

Chris L. Marsh is an experienced executive with an exceptional track record of guiding young companies through strong growth and facilitating their sale, creating liquidity for investors. He is also an active real estate investor and developer, and he currently owns Summit Development Group.

Chris currently is the CEO and Co-Founder of Facteus (formerly ARM Insight) which provides business intelligence solutions based on financial data using an innovative synthetic data process to transform raw transaction data from legacy technologies into actionable information that allows clients to make intelligent business decisions, automate manual operational tasks and optimize their data strategies.

Prior, Chris served as CEO of Revelar (formerly Pulse Health), a medical and data technology company that has developed a patented technology to detect and measure biomarkers of cell damage in exhaled breath. The Revelar system is a first-of-its-kind disruptive technology that has the potential to transform preventive health care and the field of disease prescreening.

Previously, Chris was president and CEO of Unicru, a developer of software-as-a-service talent management enterprise solutions. When Chris joined Unicru, the company was in the early development stages of its talent management solution. Under his direction, the company aligned itself around a vertically focused business model, allowing Unicru to develop industry-specific products and attain market leadership in retail, grocery, transportation, chain drug and dining segments. As part of this plan, Unicru assembled a sophisticated sales team with experience in selling enterprise software and complex solutions to vice presidents and C-level executives.

Additionally, Chris led acquisitions and strategic investments that laid the foundation for the company’s engineering and professional services teams to evolve from developing and supporting a custom solution to offering a highly configurable platform that was able to approach new markets. With products that were easier to develop, deploy and support, Unicru was able to broaden its reach to include midsized companies and target new vertical markets, such as health care.

As a result of Chris’s entrepreneurial vision and leadership, Unicru attained unprecedented success and undisputed market prominence. As CEO, Chris led Unicru to consecutive years of record revenue that generated enough cash to successfully grow the business, invest in new product development without seeking additional funding, and become a local success story in a region hit hard with unemployment. In 2006, Unicru was sold to Kronos Inc. for $170 million, a four-times revenue multiple. Chris then served as president of the Kronos Talent Management Division until Kronos was acquired later that same year by a private equity fund for $1.8 billion.

Prior to his time at Unicru, he was executive vice president of online financial brokerage firm and ATM provider E*Trade, which he joined following the company’s acquisition of Card Capture Services. Chris was chief financial officer and chief operating officer of CCS at the time of the transaction and played an instrumental role in the company’s sale.

Chris was also president and CEO of Superior Transportation Logistics, a company with more than $75 million in revenue, which he sold to The Greenbrier Companies. After the acquisition, he served as executive vice president and director of Greenbrier Logistic Companies.

In addition to having extensive experience as a hands-on executive, Chris is intimately familiar with the fiduciary responsibilities of board membership. He was a member of CloudMed Solutions’ board of directors and served as a critical adviser during the company’s sale to Revint in 2018 and played a similar role for Quiktrak during its 2014 sale to Bureau Veritas.

He currently serves on the boards of Point B Inc., Adfone, Kettle Creek Investment Partners, Qualtik and Facteus, as well as chairing the board of his own company, Summit Development Group.

Chris is also board emeritus for the Oregon chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Oregon State University and is a graduate of the executive education program at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.
